Exploring Babinda Boulders – A Tropical Rainforest Gem
Since moving to Mission Beach, I’ve been lucky enough to visit Babinda Boulders twice, and I can honestly say this beautiful rainforest paradise never disappoints! Nestled in the heart of Tropical North Queensland, it’s one of those magical places that makes you fall in love with the region all over again.
Located just outside the little town of Babinda, between Cairns and Mission Beach, Babinda Boulders is one of those hidden gems that makes Tropical North Queensland so special. Think crystal-clear freshwater swimming holes, lush rainforest, enormous granite boulders and a fascinating local legend.
Whether you’re looking for a refreshing swim, a scenic rainforest walk or simply somewhere beautiful to spend a few hours, this is definitely a place worth adding to your itinerary!

A Food Stop Before Exploring Babinda Boulders
Of course, no road trip is complete without a good food stop!
If you’re travelling between Cairns and Mission Beach, you’ll pass through the charming little town of Babinda. It’s a great place to stop, stretch your legs and grab something to eat.
There’s a lovely local bakery, but on our adventure, we decided to try Babinda Burgers & Froyo.
And judging by the photos, we certainly weren’t disappointed! Delicious burgers, a generous serving of chips and the perfect fuel for an afternoon exploring the rainforest.
With our bellies full, it was time to head out to Babinda Boulders, just a short drive from town.
Babinda Boulders: A Tropical Rainforest Paradise

The moment you arrive at Babinda Boulders, you’re surrounded by beautiful tropical rainforest.
There’s something incredibly peaceful about this place. The towering trees, the sounds of nature and the stunning freshwater swimming hole make it feel like you’ve discovered your own little slice of paradise.
And then you see the water…
Wow!
The beautiful shades of blue and green are absolutely stunning, especially when the sun shines through the rainforest canopy.
On a hot North Queensland day, it’s almost impossible to resist a refreshing swim!
The designated swimming area is a wonderful place to cool off, relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the rainforest. Just remember that conditions can change, particularly after heavy rainfall, so always follow local safety signs.

Exploring Devil’s Pool at Babinda Boulders
Here’s something funny: on my first visit to Babinda Boulders, I was so distracted by the beautiful swimming hole that I didn’t even realise there was a walking track leading to the famous Devil’s Pool lookout!
So, when I returned for a second visit, I made sure not to miss it.
And I’m so glad I did!
The walking track takes you through gorgeous tropical rainforest, with opportunities to admire the creek, huge granite boulders and the dramatic landscape shaped by flowing water over thousands of years.
Standing at the lookout and seeing the enormous smooth boulders up close is incredible.
It’s amazing to think that nature has spent so long creating this spectacular landscape.
We managed to capture some lovely photos along the way, and it was definitely one of the highlights of our visit.
The Legend of Devil’s Pool and Oolana
As beautiful as Babinda Boulders is, there’s also a fascinating and tragic history behind Devil’s Pool.
The area holds deep cultural significance for the local Aboriginal Traditional Owners, and one of its best-known stories is the legend of Oolana.
According to a commonly told version of the story, Oolana was a beautiful young woman who fell in love with a man named Dyga, despite being promised to someone else.
When the two lovers were separated, a heartbroken Oolana entered the waters of what is now known as Devil’s Pool.
The story tells that her spirit remains in the water, calling out to young men who venture too close.
It’s a haunting legend that adds another layer of mystery to this extraordinary place.
Devil’s Pool also has a tragic real-life history, with numerous people losing their lives in its dangerous waters.

Beautiful but dangerous — Devil’s Pool at Babinda Boulders is steeped in local legend and known for its powerful currents. Swimming here is strictly prohibited.

Important safety reminder: Devil’s Pool is not a swimming area. Powerful currents, slippery rocks and submerged hazards make it extremely dangerous. Always stay on the marked walking tracks and only swim in the designated swimming area when conditions are safe.
